Experiences

Discrimination

I visited a school for mentally disabled children in Kerala. During lunch, I heard  male employee tell a young girl, "Girls should sit on the floor to eat their food so that boys can sit on the chairs.

Violence & Fredom

My parents anxiously awaited the call which came at the expected time – where the boys father called mine and said his son had liked the girl and wished to be married to her. But he had conditions. One being that the girl could peruse her MBA studies but would never be allowed to work, and the second was that the boy would not be able to afford to send the girl home to her parents very regularly for visits due to financial constraints.

Workplace Gender Gap

An Indian woman employee at the London office of IT major Wipro has filed a 1 million pounds compensation case of sexual discrimination, unequal pay and unfair dismissal against the firm.

Don't wait for the change, make the change.

MAIN PROBLEMS

01

DISCRIMINATION

Discrimination of gender starts even before birth in India. Many families opt for an abortion if the child is deemed to be female. Until recently, there had also been cases of murder of a child because of it being a female.

Males, on the other hand, are expected to be given the best at all times. If you have lots of sons, you have a higher self-esteem in the society. If a daughter does something good, they are complimented by being called 'the son'. When a boy is weak or show fickle characteristics, he is called 'a girl'.

02

VIOLENCE
& FREEDOM

Women in India have to deal with violence a lot of times in their life. When they are young, it could be the anger of their male sibling; it is usual for parents to allow brothers to beat their sisters. It could be from their parents, if the parents are upset about the child being a female.

After marriage comes the permanent violence, possessive mentality of the husband. According to a survey, many Indian males think it is their right to hit their wives.

Women are also given very little freedom before, and after marriage. For example, education, job, etc.

03

WORKPLACE GENDER GAP

The workplace gender gap in itself is not that big of an issue. However, combining it with in-dependency, we get a national issue. As a woman's income is quite lower than a man's, they have to depend on a man for living. This accumulates with the parents' force to get married, leaving them with no other choice than to marry. Many women suffer through these marriages as men often take away the women's freedom.
